The American Identity could be considered and oxymoron in and of itself. From
the very inception of explorers to the "New Land" to American culture today, Americans
still don't have a firm grasp of whom they really are. In any event, I will attempt to trace
the evolution of the American identity using time honored literary figures such as
Columbus, de Vaca, Smith, Rowlandson, and others.

as to what their identity truly is, and who
are we to put a limit on what millions of people identify themselves with. America is
every culture clashing for domination and acceptance all the while recreating the
boundaries of what Americans identity is and could be. The only thing that will ever
truly identify, and remain the same, in the context of American identity, is America's
name itself given by none other than Amerigo Vespucci.
