Introduction: David Hull's book provides an evolutionary account of the development of science which pays attention to both the social and conceptual aspects of that process. I may be less optimistic than David, however, about how efficiently our present credit system functions. And I also think we need to have a good analysis of exactly how the present reward system benefits science.
