She is, in fact, largely a matter of function, helping Lear to see his evil, and keeping him from harm as long as she is able. Her's is a morality for morality's sake. The reward for her sacrifice, had Shakespeare intended one, lies in the viewer's and in Lear's knowledge that good, however rare, does exist.
